In late summer 2026, a group of seniors came together in response to the federal governments' plans to build new pipelines, back away climate commitments while disrespecting Indigenous rights. They planned a trip to Ottawa as Parliament returned to stand up for the climate and demand: fund our future, not new pipelines.
On September 8, six electric vehicles left Mile Zero in Victoria. The Western Caravan stopped in Vancouver, Kamloops, Calgary, Medicine Hat, Regina, Winnipeg, Thunder Bay, Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury. In each place they listened to people living with wildfires, smoke and floods. The Atlantic Caravan left Digby, Nova Scotia, on September 16, and both caravans reached Ottawa on September 18. They brought more than 200 photos and stories that people had given them along the way.
Many of the caravanners are in their seventies and eighties. Not all of them are in good health. They went anyway, as leaders and on behalf of everyone who couldn't make the trip.
From September 19 to 24 they marched, gathered and practised nonviolent action in Ottawa. On September 22 they tried to deliver photos and stories people had shared of things that were at stake to lose from climate change. 11 were arrested for trespassing on parliament hill.
The next day they sat in rocking chairs and blocked a main street. They said the rocking chairs showed why they had come: love for their children, their grandchildren and all living beings.
